# Meal planning without an endless banned-food list

> General educational information, not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

There is no single gout-curing menu. Start with a balanced pattern you can sustain, adapted to your health needs, budget, culture, and preferences. Food planning should support the treatment plan and reduce unnecessary restriction. A dietitian can help reconcile gout advice with kidney disease, diabetes, allergies, or other constraints. [S03] [S15]

## Practical changes to try

These are meal-planning ideas, rather than tested flare-prevention prescriptions:

- Replace some organ-meat or large red-meat portions with plant protein or another suitable protein source.
- Build meals around vegetables, grains, and an appropriate protein component.
- Keep suitable unsweetened drinks available.
- Plan an alcohol-free option for social occasions.
- Stock convenient ingredients for days when shopping or standing at a stove is difficult.

Do not ban beans, lentils, or vegetables simply because they contain purines. Their observed associations differ from animal-source exposures. [S30]

## Compare portions, not just rankings

The measured table is most useful when the food description and preparation match what you eat. A raw meat entry, a cooked one, and a dried seasoning used in a small amount describe different situations. A 100-gram ranking cannot tell you the attack risk from a meal. [S27] [S28]

## Plan for the difficult days

As practical options, consider a short shopping list, meals with little preparation, or help with groceries during a flare. Choose foods that suit any other nutrition advice you have received. Convenience is a legitimate part of making a plan workable.

## Review the rules if they are taking over

If restrictions leave you inadequately nourished, socially isolated, or distressed about eating, the plan needs another look. Raise that with your care team. Food choices should fit into a life with treatment and follow-up, rather than becoming the only measure of whether you are doing enough. [S03] [S15]
