# Gout reference for healthcare professionals

> General educational information, not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

These reference pages summarize the evidence behind the patient-facing explanations, retaining diagnostic uncertainty, recommendation strength, treatment targets, safety issues, and jurisdictional differences. They await medical review and do not replace source guidelines, local pathways, or current prescribing information.

## Start with the source documents

The research foundation uses ACR’s 2020 management guideline, NICE NG219 published in 2022, EULAR’s 2018 diagnostic recommendations, and the 2023 EULAR imaging recommendations published in 2024. Recommendation year and publication year should remain distinct. [S01] [S02] [S03] [S04] [S05]

## Diagnostic assessment

Assess urgent alternatives in acute arthritis. Serum urate alone cannot establish the cause of a painful swollen joint. Aspiration and imaging have complementary roles, and evidence of crystal deposition does not exclude coexisting infection. See the [diagnostic reference](https://www.gout-life.com/professionals/diagnostic-reference/). [S03] [S05]

## Management and follow-up

Separate flare control from long-term urate reduction. Establish indications, the target, titration, prophylaxis, monitoring, and review of comorbidities and medicines. The [management reference](https://www.gout-life.com/professionals/management-reference/) preserves ACR and NICE differences rather than combining them into a universal protocol. [S02] [S03]

## Product-specific information can postdate guidelines

Consult current local labels for indications, warnings, contraindications, and formulations. Pegloticase co-treatment instructions and the canakinumab gout indication illustrate why an older broad guideline is insufficient for every current product detail. [S13] [S14]

## Limits of this reference set

Detailed pregnancy, lactation, pediatric, dialysis, transplant, advanced-therapy, and renal protocols require further specialist evidence and review. Remedy reviews also need formal appraisal before recommendations. The symptom guide is educational and does not provide a validated diagnostic decision rule.
