# Gout images and educational videos

> General educational information, not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Pictures can explain what a paragraph struggles to show. They can also mislead without the right context. A photograph of another person’s joint cannot diagnose yours, and a microscopic image is not the same thing as a visible symptom.

## Seeing urate crystals

The collection includes a polarized-light image of expressed tophus material from a foot wound. It illustrates needle-shaped urate crystals, rather than a routine joint-fluid sample. Another image shows an H&E-stained tissue section from a tophus. These are different preparations and need different captions.

## Photographs of tophi

An elbow photograph is available in the research collection, but its license-version details still need reconciliation before use. Clinical photographs should show their source and context and should not be treated as a guide to what any lump must be.

## Educational videos

Johns Hopkins Rheumatology provides a [six-part gout education series](https://www.hopkinsarthritis.org/arthritis-info/gout/gout-disease-education-video-series/). The issuer page includes videos on understanding gout, lifestyle, and diet. External links are provided for optional further viewing; the videos have not been fully reviewed for clinical recency or captions in this project. They do not replace current care advice.

Videos are linked on their original publisher’s website. These links do not grant permission to download or rehost either organization’s videos.

## Make the explanation accessible

Every informative image needs descriptive alt text and a caption that explains its role. Do not depend only on redness or color; appearance varies with skin tone and lighting. The future clinical library needs consented acute examples across skin tones, alongside clear original diagrams. [S08]
