Gout and other health conditions
Prepared 2026-10-29 · Read as Markdown
The painful joint may be what brings you to care, but gout treatment also needs to account for the rest of your health. Kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease are common concerns in people with gout. Association does not prove that gout caused an individual condition, or that urate treatment will prevent every related problem. [S06]

Why your other conditions matter to the plan
Kidney function, heart history, stomach or bleeding risks, diabetes, liver function, and other medicines can change which flare or urate-lowering treatment is appropriate. A standard rescue plan is not suitable for everyone. S02 S03
Kidney disease and stones
Kidney function affects urate removal and medicine choices. Some uricosuric treatments are unsuitable or less effective with kidney impairment or stones. ACR still prefers allopurinol as an initial option in chronic kidney disease, starting low and adjusting with monitoring. S02 S12
Heart and metabolic health
Blood pressure, diabetes, weight, and cardiovascular risks belong in a broader review. Febuxostat’s US boxed warning needs a specific discussion; it should neither be ignored nor generalized to every gout medicine. S03 S11
Tophi and joint damage
Persistent deposits can affect skin, movement, and joint structure. New lumps and changes in function deserve assessment. The tophi page explains what to discuss. S06
When general adult advice is not enough
Transplant recipients and people with complex disease need tailored input. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, and dialysis require dedicated evidence and specialist review; routine adult advice cannot simply be copied across. Gout in women or younger adults should not be dismissed because it falls outside a stereotype. S03 S06
Bring your complete condition and medicine list to appointments so the plan can be reviewed as a whole.
